Dear Sir,

It was a disastrous beginning of 2020, as China had a large number of cases of COVID-19 beginning from Wuhan and which was soon became a global pandemic. On March 11, 2020, the WHO Director General declared it as a global emergency.[1] Since that day, the whole world is on toe and trying to control the new pandemic. Each country has different strategies and actions as nobody has treatment or vaccine. The fear of disease is so extreme that the world economy is falling, and people are expecting a great recession.

As epidemiologists, what comes to our mind is an epidemiological triad. In this triad, the agent is coronavirus, which is a new virus, about 5–6 months old. Scientists and microbiologists are trying to understand, and this will take time. The second is environment, which is between the agent and host. Majority of the current actions such as social distancing, lockdown, hand hygiene, cough etiquettes, and environmental sanitation are mainly focusing breaking the chain of transmission.[2] In addition, there is limited knowledge about the survival of the virus in environment. Thus, both the agent and environment have limitations. But host, why are we forgetting about the host?

Host means we as human being. We have our own defense mechanism. In the last two decades, there were many epidemics or pandemics around the world, 65 reported by Wikipedia.[3] The scenario is such that, we can expect more and more unknown epidemics or pandemics worldwide. So, it is high time to take action to strengthen the host.

There are several factors which are helping to strengthen our host defense system. One of them is physical health of individuals and nutritional status. Simple tips such as adequate sleep, balanced diet, probiotics, sugar restriction, physical exercise, hydration, avoiding addiction, healthy body mass index, and timely preventive checkup will help us to stay physically healthy.[4] Second is mental health. A mentally healthy person is one who is not in conflict with himself, is well adjusted with the surroundings, searches for his purpose and identity, has a strong sense of self-esteem, knows himself well, has good self-control, and faces problems and solves them.[5] The social aspect of health is also important. A socially healthy person is happy with his job or studies, has quality time with family, is ready to support or help the society, and respects other people.

Thus, the three pillars included in the definition of health play an important role to keep a person healthy and fit to fight against any disease. One more parameter which is still untouched is the spiritual health. It has a great role in making a person healthy and happy. Gomez defined spiritual health as the connection with self, others, nature, and God.[6]

Any abnormality in any of these pillars of health will compromise the host defense mechanism, leaving the individual with a high chance of getting the disease. In addition, working on host immunity is really cost-effective and almost nil investment by an individual or nation. Thus, if we work on the balance of these four pillars, he or she will definitely be able to fight against any disease, and we will have a happy and healthy world.
