On a moonlit night a boy and a girl sat on the roof of a high rise building, with a cool breeze, pregnant with romance, blowing across their faces. The boy professed his love in the most poetic language at his command and conjured up images of a conjugal life that would be strewn with roses and rainbows. His monologue was sharply interrupted by a short retort from the girl –

“What is the EVIDENCE that you love me ?”

The boy pulled out a credit card from his purse and said

“I can purchase the world for you” .

“That is you inheritance” retorted the girl .

The boy holding her hand broke into an old romantic number

“That is your talent” interrupted the girl.

The boy said “wait”, as he ran down the stairs of the high building , and came running up panting for breath and pleaded,

“See, this is what I can do for you, and much more.”.

“That is your training and stamina”, the girl was quick to add.

And before the conversation could get any further, the boy jumped from the top of the building. The girl looked down.

The ‘EVIDENCE’ that she had asked for, lay lifeless in a pool of blood below!!!

This brings us to the moot question, “what is evidence?” Is it something all pervading and all encompassing or is it something, more emphasized then really required, especially in those aspects of existence, which cannot be and should not be defined by a scientific temper.

Evidence, broadly speaking is anything presented in support of an assertion. That which establishes a truth beyond ambiguity is strong evidence, while that, which leaves the possibility of another point of view, is circumstantial evidence. Though today it has occupied centre-stage, from time immemorial the concept and utility of evidence has been emphasized in various fields.

In theology, schools of philosophy have sprung up from time to time providing evidence to establish the presence of God or otherwise. Those who accepted the evidences became believers, even zealots , and those who did not, opened new schools of thought providing new evidences, and the process continues unhalted! Even today each day we see new propagators and new followers.

In the field of jurisprudence, the established axiom is that one is innocent till proven guilty. A law revolves around this principle, and lawyers make a fortune out of it! Evidences become crucial in establishment or negation of crime. However, this is one field of activity where evidence is more famous for distortion and manipulation than for being sanguine!

In science, evidence takes an enormous proportion and permeates every sphere of enquiry, though times have been witness to strong established evidences crumbling like a deck of cards before new emerging evidences. Today evidences are generated at such a rapid pace that a new branch of science and training is required to validate evidence. We are living in times when guidelines are required to understand guidelines! Science and a spirit of enquiry have existed for centuries and investigators have given all that they had : time, money , reputation , even life , searching for that elusive evidence which would vindicate them or contrarily through painstaking, unshakeable resolve have single handedly established that truth, which has stood the test of time. What would they say, if they could rise from their graves? They would perhaps be perplexed and baffled by the new lexicon of evidence!!

Smitten by this evidence, if we start looking for it all around us, life would become mechanical and disjointed. Faith, love, companionship, friendships, bonds all would fall by the wayside. How does one produce evidence for these subtle, sublime emotions? What evidence can a spouse produce for the feeling for the other? What evidence can a soldier show for his valor, except his martyrdom, and even that might be interrupted in various ways as per political expediency! How can parents show the evidence of their care for their progeny except by bequeathing all their possessions, and even that might be misconstrued as an act for favor and security! Confidence in relationships cannot be measured by ‘confidence intervals’! What would the world become if RCT's were to decide love and marriage, and life was to be conducted as per meta-analysis and systemic reviews! Feelings would become dead statistics and humans would become tools in the hand of some clever investigator!!

It is said that in all matters of heart, unspoken, unwritten thoughts freely travel between people in love. Telepathy, a manifestation of such a phenomenon has been studied extensively, even under scientific scrutiny. So have been other forms of ESP (extra sensory perception). And there are evidences galore to testify to the above and many such occurrences, but perhaps not to the satisfaction of those who dissect evidences to fit them into a ‘pyramid’ for acceptability!

Let us accept, there is a life and truth beyond EVIDENCE. It is not the last frontier. There are horizons beyond, and life has an inherent capacity to go beyond the possible and the probable. It reminds me of a line from Shakespeare when Hamlet tells his friend Horario, “there are more things in heaven and earth Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

In any care, EVIDENCES are only small, receding, ever changing milestone in the vast journey of existence.
